Bertsekas

Demetri P. Bertsekas is a prominent Greek-American engineer, mathematician, and academic known for his contributions to optimization theory, control systems, and numerical analysis. Born on October 28, 1941, in Athens, Greece, he earned his undergraduate degree in electrical engineering from the National Technical University of Athens in 1963. He later pursued graduate studies in the United States, earning his master’s and doctoral degrees in electrical engineering and applied mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1965 and 1967, respectively.

Bertsekas has held academic positions at several prestigious institutions, including MIT, where he served as a professor of electrical engineering and computer science from 1967 until his retirement in 2019. He has also been affiliated with the University of Texas at Austin and the University of California, Berkeley. His research focuses on optimization algorithms, stochastic control, reinforcement learning, and large-scale systems, with applications in engineering, economics, and artificial intelligence.

A prolific author, Bertsekas has written numerous influential textbooks and research papers. His works, such as *Nonlinear Programming* (1982), *Dynamic Programming and Optimal Control* (1970), and *Network Optimization* (1998), have become standard references in the fields of optimization and control theory. He has also co-authored books on stochastic control and reinforcement learning, including *Parallel and Distributed Computation of Stochastic Control Problems* (1996) and *Reinforcement Learning: An Introduction* (2012), which has been widely adopted in machine learning and artificial intelligence education.

He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and he has been awarded the IEEE Control Systems Award (1988) and the SIAM George B.
