Bergsteigerei is the German term for mountaineering, describing the sport and practice of ascending mountains, especially in the Alps and other high ranges. It covers a broad spectrum from non-technical bergwandern and alpine touring to technical rock, ice, and mixed climbing on exposed alpine routes. Practitioners are known as Bergsteiger.

Historically, Bergsteigerei developed in the 19th century alongside Alpine exploration and the formation of national alpine clubs in German-speaking regions. Pioneers such as Ludwig Purtscheller, Hermann Buhl, and Reinhold Messner advanced climbing techniques, logistics, and high-altitude ascent. The activity contributed to a wider cultural interest in science, exploration, and the mountains, shaping both professional guiding and amateur pursuits.

Practices span a range of disciplines. Equipment traditionally includes ropes, harnesses, helmets, carabiners, protection devices, crampons, ice axes, and other protective gear.
