Berbatasan

Berbatasan is an Indonesian geographic term used to describe a relationship between two or more areas that share a boundary. It is commonly applied to administrative units such as provinces, regencies, and municipalities, as well as to sovereign states. Descriptions using berbatasan are typical in maps, legal documents, and news reports when outlining location and adjacency.

The word is formed from batasan (boundary) with the prefix ber-, yielding berbatasan, which literally means “having borders with.” The standard construction is berbatasan dengan, followed by the name of the neighboring entity, as in berbatasan dengan negara X or berbatasan dengan daerah Y.

Berbatasan is a neutral descriptor. It conveys spatial relationships without implying possession or control. It is used in discussions of geography, infrastructure planning near borders, administration of cross-border resources, and, when combined with other terms, discussions of border security or territorial disputes.
