Benyomások

Benyomások is a Hungarian noun meaning impressions. It can refer to mental or perceptual impressions formed by experiences or stimuli, as well as physical impressions left on a surface by pressure, stamping, or printing. The term is used in everyday language as well as in technical contexts such as psychology, art, and printing.

Etymology and usage notes: Benyomás derives from the verb nyomni, “to press,” with the prefix be-, yielding “pressing into” or “an impression created by pressing.” The plural benyomások is commonly used in general speech, for example in the phrase első benyomások to denote first impressions.

In psychology and everyday language: Benyomások describe subjective interpretations of people, situations, or objects. They are often formed quickly and can influence later judgments and behavior. First impressions are a well-known example. Benyomások may be fleeting or can leave lasting mental traces, shaping memory and attitude even after new information becomes available.

In printing, art, and material culture: In these contexts benyomás refers to an imprint left on a material as a result of pressing a stamp, die, or printing plate. Techniques such as mélynyomás (intaglio) involve producing impressions on paper or another substrate. An individual imprint is called a benyomás, and collections of marks can be discussed as benyomások.
