Etymology traces the origin to the practice of a lead sheep in a flock wearing a bell. The lead sheep, historically called a bell-wether, guided the others, and the term came to denote the figure or thing that signals the course of events. Over time, bellwether became a general label for any early indicator of trends.

In politics, bellwethers are jurisdictions whose outcomes have historically aligned with national results, or regions thought to reflect broader electoral sentiment. In finance and business, bellwethers are companies, industries, or market indices considered representative of wider movements; their performance is taken as a proxy for overall market direction. The concept also appears in cultural or social contexts, where a trend observed in a bellwether group may presage wider adoption.
