Bellefonte

Bellefonte is a borough located in Centre County, Pennsylvania, United States. Situated about 80 kilometers (50 miles) northwest of Harrisburg, it is part of the State College metropolitan area. The borough lies at an elevation of approximately 515 meters (1,690 feet) above sea level and is set amid the Appalachian foothills, providing a mix of residential neighborhoods and rural surroundings.

The community was founded in 1851 by a group of trustees with the purpose of establishing a planned settlement. Bellefonte was incorporated as a borough in 1878. Its name, derived from the French term meaning “beautiful sound,” reflects the area's scenic landscape and early aspirations of creating an attractive environment for settlers. In 1871, the town became the county seat of Centre County, a role it held until 1889, when the seat was moved to State College.

Bellefonte’s demographics have remained relatively stable over recent decades. According to the 2020 census, the borough’s population stood at roughly 5,400 residents, with a mix of families and professionals commuting to jobs in surrounding towns. The small-town character is maintained through local institutions such as the Bellefonte Public Library and several community parks.

Economically, Bellefonte hosts a combination of small businesses, retail services, and light manufacturing.
