Beiaard

Beiaard is a term that refers to a carillon, a musical instrument consisting of a set of tuned bells arranged in such a way that the player can produce a melody by striking them with a keyboard. These bells are typically hung in a tower or belfry. The player, known as a carillonneur, uses a keyboard with wooden levers (batons) for the hands and pedals for the feet to strike the clappers of the bells.

Carillons are found in many countries, particularly in Belgium, the Netherlands, and France, where they are often a prominent feature of town halls, churches, and universities. The tradition of carillons dates back to the Middle Ages, with significant developments in bell casting and keyboard mechanisms occurring in the 17th century. The quality of a carillon is determined by the number of bells, their tuning, and the uniformity of their tone. Larger carillons can have over 60 bells.

The music played on a carillon can range from classical compositions to folk songs and popular tunes. Many carillons are played live by a carillonneur at scheduled times, while others are automated to play pre-programmed melodies.
