Behaviorcontrasted, commonly referred to as behavioral contrast, is a phenomenon in operant conditioning where changing the reinforcement conditions in one component of a concurrent or multiple schedule produces a change in the rate of a target behavior in another component, typically in the opposite direction of the change in reinforcement.

The effect is observed in both animals and humans and is described as positive or negative contrast. Positive contrast occurs when a decrease in reinforcement in one component leads to an increase in responding in another component, while negative contrast occurs when an increase in reinforcement in one component leads to a decrease in responding in the other. The terminology reflects the direction of change relative to baseline levels.

Mechanisms for behavioral contrast are often discussed in the context of relative reinforcement and choice. The matching law provides a framework for understanding how organisms distribute responses across components in proportion to received reinforcement, but contrast effects indicate that changes in reinforcement in one component can produce outsized or opposite shifts in the other component beyond simple proportionality. Experimental findings typically involve two-key or two-response setups where reinforcement rates on one component are systematically altered.
