Begränsningsvillkor, often translated as boundary conditions, are constraints imposed on the solution of differential equations. These conditions specify the value of the solution or its derivatives at the boundaries of the domain over which the equation is being solved. Without appropriate boundary conditions, a differential equation may have an infinite number of possible solutions, making it impossible to determine a unique, physically meaningful answer.

There are several common types of boundary conditions. Dirichlet boundary conditions specify the value of the solution directly at the boundary. For example, in a heat transfer problem, this might be the fixed temperature at the edges of a heated plate. Neumann boundary conditions, on the other hand, specify the derivative of the solution at the boundary. In the same heat transfer example, this could represent the rate of heat flow across the boundary. Robin boundary conditions, also known as mixed boundary conditions, involve both the solution value and its derivative at the boundary, often representing a combination of physical phenomena like convection.

The nature and number of boundary conditions required depend on the order of the differential equation and the physical problem being modeled. For a second-order ordinary differential equation, typically two boundary conditions are needed to specify a unique solution. In partial differential equations, boundary conditions are applied along the spatial boundaries of the domain. The correct formulation and application of boundary conditions are crucial for obtaining accurate and relevant results in fields such as physics, engineering, and applied mathematics.
