Bayleyskalaen

Bayleyskalaen is a mountain range on the western peninsula of the fictional island of Bayleysland in the Nordmark region. The range extends roughly 120 kilometers in a north-south orientation, featuring rugged summits and deep glacial valleys. The highest peak is Mount Vardrind, rising to about 2,480 meters above sea level. The range acts as a natural barrier between inland basins and the coast, influencing local weather and watershed patterns.

Etymology: The name combines the island’s name with an Old Norse-derived element skal (or skalr) meaning cliff or scale, reflecting the prominent, sheer rock faces that characterize many of the peaks.

Geology and climate: The range is mainly composed of metamorphic rocks such as gneiss and granite, sculpted by multiple glaciations. The climate is alpine maritime, with heavy winter snow and cool, short summers. Persistent snowfields and small glaciers remain on several high summits, and the western slopes receive more precipitation than the eastern faces, creating distinct ecological zones.

Biodiversity and protected status: Foothill zones host mixed forests that transition to subalpine heath and alpine tundra at higher elevations. Notable species include the rock ptarmigan, alpine chough, and Arctic hare, along with specialized mosses and lichens. Bayleyskalaen Reserve, established in 1985, protects watersheds, habitats, and migratory routes for several high-elevation species.

Human activity: Settlement is sparse, with access primarily through foothill towns such as Norfell and Aksfjord. The area supports recreational use, including hiking and climbing, under a framework of conservation rules. Resource extraction is limited to safeguard ecological integrity and tourism value.
