Bayajidda

Bayajidda is a legendary figure in the oral traditions of the Hausa people of West Africa. His story is primarily found in the genealogies of the Hausa states and recounts the founding of some of their most important cities, particularly Daura.

According to the myth, Bayajidda was a prince from Baghdad who traveled extensively. He eventually arrived in Daura, a city that was suffering under the tyranny of a great serpent that demanded daily sacrifices. The serpent, known as Sarki, would not allow the people to draw water from the town's well except on its appointed day. Bayajidda, hearing of this plight, pledged to kill the serpent. He waited by the well and, when the serpent appeared, he struck it with his sword, killing it.

As a reward for his bravery, Bayajidda was married to the queen of Daura, Magajiya Daurama. Together, they had a son named Bawo, who is considered the ancestor of the Daura dynasty. Bayajidda is also credited with having other children with various women, who are said to have founded other Hausa cities and groups, thus explaining the origins of the various Hausa communities. The story of Bayajidda serves as an etiological myth, explaining the historical and political origins of the Hausa people and their states.
