Baugi

Baugi is a figure in Norse mythology. He is a jötunn, a frost giant, and a brother to Fárbauti and Kári. Baugi is most famously known for his role in the tale of the mead of poetry. In this story, Odin, disguised as a traveler, seeks to obtain the mead, which grants wisdom and poetic skill. Odin learns that the mead is kept in a cave guarded by the giant Suttungr. Baugi is Suttungr's uncle and assists Odin in his quest.

According to the Eddic poem Hávamál, Odin enlists Baugi's help to gain access to the mead. Baugi, seemingly persuaded by Odin, guides him to the cave where Suttungr stores the mead in three cauldrons. Odin instructs Baugi to bore a hole through the rock. Once the hole is made, Odin transforms himself into a serpent and slithers through the opening. He then consumes all the mead, filling three vessels and pouring the contents into his mouth. He then transforms back into his eagle form and flies away with the mead. Baugi's role is primarily that of an intermediary or accomplice in Odin's acquisition of this powerful substance. His actions highlight the complex relationships and often deceptive strategies employed by the gods in their pursuit of knowledge and power.
