Batteribränder, also known as battery fires, refer to incidents where batteries overheat and ignite, potentially causing significant damage and posing safety risks. These fires are most commonly associated with lithium-ion batteries, which are prevalent in portable electronic devices such as smartphones, laptops, and electric vehicles due to their high energy density.

The primary cause of lithium-ion battery fires is often internal short-circuiting. This can occur due to manufacturing defects, physical damage to the battery (such as puncturing or crushing), overcharging, or extreme temperatures. When a short circuit occurs, it can trigger a runaway thermal event, a process where the battery's internal temperature increases rapidly, leading to the release of flammable gases and ignition.

Symptoms of a malfunctioning battery that could lead to a fire include swelling of the battery casing, unusual heat, smoke, or a burning smell. If a battery fire is suspected, the immediate priority is to evacuate the area and contact emergency services. Attempting to extinguish a lithium-ion battery fire with water can sometimes worsen the situation due to the chemical reactions involved. Specialized fire extinguishers designed for metal fires or Class D fires are often recommended, though their effectiveness can vary.

Preventative measures include using chargers and equipment specifically designed for the battery, avoiding physical damage, and not exposing batteries to extreme heat or cold. Proper disposal of damaged or old batteries is also crucial to prevent potential hazards.
