Batteribankar, a term used in several languages including Icelandic, refers to a collection of rechargeable energy storage cells arranged to store electrical energy for later use. They function as a buffer between energy generation and consumption, enabling backup power, peak shaving, and grid stabilization when integrated with sources such as solar panels or wind turbines.

A batteribank consists of individual cells connected in series and/or parallel to achieve the desired voltage and capacity. Core components include the cells themselves, a battery management system (BMS) that monitors voltage, temperature, and state of charge, and protective hardware such as fuses, contactors, and thermal management. Additional equipment may include inverters or DC-DC converters, monitoring software, and enclosures or cooling systems to maintain safe operating temperatures.

Chemistries used in batteribankar vary. Common options include lead-acid variants (flooded, AGM, GEL) for lower upfront costs; lithium-ion chemistries (such as NMC or LFP) for higher energy density and longer cycle life; and through-flow or redox-flow batteries for scalable architectures. Systems are designed in different scales, from small residential banks of a few kilowatt-hours to large commercial and utility-scale installations measuring in megawatt-hours.

Applications range from stationary energy storage for homes and commercial buildings to data centers, telecommunications, microgrids, and grid-scale storage that helps balance supply and demand. Advantages include improved reliability, resilience, and the ability to integrate intermittent renewables; limitations involve cost, lifecycle considerations, thermal management, and safety requirements.
