It is a type of small, free-reed aerophone, similar to the *bombo de los muertos* or *quena*, but distinct in its construction and sound. The name "batareám" comes from the Quechua language, where "bata" means "to blow" and "reám" refers to the instrument itself, combining to describe its function as a wind-blown sound producer.

The batareám is typically crafted from bamboo or wood, with a cylindrical body and a single reed that produces a nasal, flute-like tone.
