BASE jumping is a form of parachuting in which a person jumps from a fixed object and uses a parachute to descend to the ground. BASE is an acronym for Building, Antenna, Span (such as bridges or arches), and Earth (natural formations like cliffs). The practice emerged in the late 20th century, with pioneers such as Carl Boenish documenting and promoting the activity, which rapidly developed a dedicated community and a range of jumping sites worldwide.

Jumps are performed from relatively short stopping points compared with traditional skydiving, giving jumpers shorter freefall times and tighter margins for canopy deployment and maneuvering. Common objects include tall buildings, communication towers, bridges, and natural cliffs. Equipment typically includes a main parachute, a reserve parachute, and, in some cases, wingsuits that can extend glide. Because the altitude and environmental factors are highly variable, BASE jumping is considered among the most hazardous forms of parachuting, with risks including impact with terrain, collision with structures, and unpredictable weather conditions.

Legal and safety considerations are a major aspect of BASE jumping. Many locations prohibit jumping from fixed objects, and permits or organized groups may be required in others. Access to sites, liability, and emergency response limitations are common concerns. Because of the elevated risk, potential participants are advised to obtain substantial prior experience in related disciplines and to engage with established communities that emphasize safety and local regulations.
