BasRhins

BasRhins is a fictional geographic region located in the northern portion of the Veridian mainland, facing the Silver Sea. It covers approximately 12,000 square kilometers, with a coast of basalt cliffs and a hinterland of forests and farmland. The terrain ranges from basalt escarpments to rolling hills, and several rivers drain toward the sea.

The name BasRhins combines Bas, meaning low or southern in the local lexicon, and Rhins, an ancient term for promontory used in regional trade routes. The region is subdivided into five districts: Port Bas, Rivenshore, Northmark, Dunmere, and Eastwood. Basport serves as the capital and largest city.

History and governance: Human settlement dates to the Bronze Age; BasRhins developed as a mercantile hub in medieval times, with shipyards along its estuaries. It became part of the Veridian Federation in 1847 and gained a degree of autonomy in 1923. The region is administered as a semi-autonomous province within Veridia, with Basport as the administrative center.

Economy and infrastructure: The economy relies on fishing, aquaculture, shipbuilding, agriculture, and tourism. Renewable energy projects include offshore wind farms in the Silver Sea and tidal power in the estuaries. Transportation networks connect Basport to surrounding towns via highways and ferries, with Basport Airport handling regional air traffic.

Demographics and culture: The population is around 420,000. Official language is Veridian, with the BasRhins dialect widely spoken in rural areas. Religious practice is diverse, but secularism is common. Cultural life centers on harbors, markets, and the annual Regatta Week.

Notable features: BasRhins Cliffs National Reserve, the Old Wharf Archaeological Site, and Basport Marina are prominent landmarks.
