Bands

A band is a group of musicians who perform together, typically playing a mix of instruments and singing as a unit. Most bands have a lead vocalist and primary instrumentalists such as guitar, bass, drums, and keyboards, but configurations range from duos to large ensembles. The term is most often used for popular music groups but applies to many genres, including rock, pop, jazz, folk, and metal.

Bands form when musicians share goals and repertoire. Roles are often defined but may be fluid; members might swap instruments or share songwriting and lead duties. Rehearsals, auditions, and collaboration on arrangements help establish the band's sound and identity. Bands perform live in clubs, concert halls, and festivals and may also record originals or covers.

In the studio or on stage, bands create and present music through original material or interpretations of others’ work. Recording has evolved from analog to digital processes, and releases reach audiences via physical formats, streaming, and social media. Touring and promotion are complementary to performance and recording.

Lineups can change over time, with members joining, leaving, or forming new groups. Many bands release multiple records, undergo stylistic shifts, or go on hiatus and later reform. The band-life cycle—formation, development, peak, decline, and dissolution—varies by group and is a central feature of popular music history.
