Ballastwasserbehandlung refers to the processes and technologies used to treat ballast water carried by ships. Ballast water is essential for the stability and maneuverability of vessels, but it can also contain aquatic organisms such as plankton, bacteria, and larvae. When ships discharge ballast water in new environments, these organisms can become invasive species, disrupting local ecosystems and potentially causing economic damage.

The primary goal of ballast water treatment is to eliminate or neutralize these potentially harmful organisms before they are discharged. Various treatment methods are employed, often in combination. These include physical methods like filtration, which removes larger organisms and particles, and energy-based methods such as ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. UV light effectively kills or inactivates microorganisms by damaging their DNA.

Chemical treatment is another common approach, involving the addition of biocides that kill or inactivate organisms. However, this method requires careful control to ensure that the discharged water does not harm the receiving environment. More recently, deoxygenation and ozonation have also been explored and implemented. Deoxygenation removes oxygen from the water, which can kill or incapacitate many marine organisms. Ozonation uses ozone, a powerful oxidant, to disinfect the water.

International regulations, notably the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) Ballast Water Management Convention, mandate that ships implement ballast water treatment systems to prevent the transfer of invasive aquatic species. The selection of a specific treatment system depends on factors such as the ship's size, route, and regulatory requirements. Ongoing research and development aim to improve the efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and environmental compatibility of ballast water treatment technologies.
