BallSat

BallSat is a term used in educational, amateur, and some research contexts to describe a small, near-spherical satellite platform designed for low-cost experiments and outreach. Unlike more standardized classes such as CubeSats, ballSats are not defined by a strict size or mass, and their specifications vary widely across programs.

Design and form factor: The hallmark of a ballSat is its spherical or near-spherical exterior, which can range from roughly 10 to 40 centimeters in diameter depending on the design. Many ballSats rely on passive methods or simple spin stabilization, while some use small actuators such as magnetorquers or compact reaction wheels if orientation control is required by the mission.

Typical payloads include environmental sensors, radiation dosimeters, or small experiments in materials science. They provide accessible platforms for hands-on learning and for validating concepts prior to larger spacecraft developments.
