A Balancefahrzeug, often translated as a self-balancing vehicle or personal transporter, is a type of electric vehicle characterized by its ability to maintain an upright position on two wheels arranged in-line. These vehicles typically operate by using gyroscopic sensors and electric motors to continuously adjust the wheel's speed and direction, compensating for the rider's movements and external forces. The rider stands on a platform between the wheels and controls the vehicle by shifting their weight. Leaning forward propels the vehicle forward, leaning backward causes it to decelerate or reverse, and tilting the platform side-to-side can initiate turns.

The technology behind balance vehicles draws inspiration from complex control systems that manage stability. Early prototypes and concepts emerged in the late 20th century, but it was the advent of more sophisticated sensor technology and battery power that led to commercially viable products. Segway is a well-known example of a balance vehicle that gained popularity for its potential in personal mobility and niche applications. Other variations include one-wheeled electric unicycles and smaller, often more agile, two-wheeled devices that are gaining traction for recreational use and short-distance commuting.
