Bahoruco

Bahoruco is a province located in the southwestern region of the Dominican Republic. It is bordered by Independencia Province to the west and north, Pedernales Province to the south, and Barahona Province to the east. The province is named after the Bahoruco mountain range, a significant geographical feature that dominates its landscape. The capital city of Bahoruco is Neiba.

The economy of Bahoruco is primarily agricultural, with significant cultivation of bananas, plantains, corn, beans, and cassava. Cattle ranching is also a notable activity. The province's proximity to the Haitian border influences its economic and social dynamics. Tourism is a developing sector, with attractions including the Enriquillo Lake, the largest salt lake in the Caribbean, and the surrounding natural beauty of the Bahoruco mountains.

Historically, the region has been inhabited since pre-Columbian times. The province was officially established in 1949, formerly part of the larger Barahona province. The population of Bahoruco is predominantly of mixed European and African descent. The official language is Spanish.
