Bahnwesen
Bahnwesen, literally meaning “railway system” in German, denotes the sector of rail transport and the institutions that govern, operate, and support it in German-speaking regions and, more broadly, in Europe. It covers the planning, construction, maintenance, and operation of rail infrastructure and rolling stock, as well as timetable planning, passenger services, freight services, and related activities such as safety, signaling, and ticketing. The system comprises infrastructure managers (tracks, stations, signaling, electrification), railway companies (operators of passenger and freight services, both state-owned and private), and regulatory bodies responsible for safety, interoperability, and competition.
