Bahnsignale

Bahnsignale are devices and systems used on railways to convey information to train drivers and to regulate train movements. They indicate when to stop or proceed, speed restrictions, route alignment, and other conditions that affect safe operation. Signaling works in concert with interlocking, track circuits, and control centers to ensure trains follow correctly set routes without conflicts.

The signaling landscape has evolved from mechanical semaphore arms to electric and color-light installations. In German-speaking railways the system typically distinguishes Hauptsignale (main signals) and Vorsignale (distant or approach signals). Main signals convey permission to proceed or stop, while distant signals warn of the status of the next main signal. Modern networks rely largely on color-light signals that can display multiple aspects and speed indications, sometimes accompanied by route indicators.

Signaling is integrated with interlocking, a safety mechanism that prevents conflicting movements. Interlockings coordinate signals with switches (points) and track occupancy detection, using track circuits or axle counters to confirm that a route is clear before a signal changes to allow movement.

History and modernization: The technology began with mechanical signals in the 19th century and transitioned to electric and color-light systems during the 20th century. Standardization efforts aimed at improving safety, reliability, and interoperability across regions. In many networks, cab signaling and centralized traffic control have complemented fixed signals, and European railways increasingly adopt integrated protection systems, including ETCS, to harmonize operation across borders.

Geographic scope and usage: Bahnsignale are employed on German-speaking rail networks and in neighboring countries with compatible systems. While specific implementations vary, the core function remains to translate track status into driver-facing indications that govern safe train movement.
