Baffleplaters

Baffleplaters are modular assemblies of baffle plates designed to be installed inside vessels, ducts, or heat exchanger shells to shape fluid flow, enhance heat transfer, and control noise or sedimentation. They are used in a range of industrial settings to create deliberate flow paths, improve mixing, and distribute phase contact more evenly.

Design and construction commonly feature plates that can be flat or curved, and may be solid or perforated. The plates are mounted on a supporting frame and arranged at a deliberate angle or spacing to force the fluid to follow a serpentine path. Materials are chosen for the operating environment, with stainless steel, carbon steel, and corrosion-resistant alloys being typical options. Some systems use fixed plate assemblies, while others offer adjustable or replaceable elements to tune performance.

Function and performance arise from increasing flow path length and surface area while interrupting straightforward flow. This promotes better contact between phases in reactors or cooling/heating media in heat exchangers, improves mixing, and reduces short-circuiting in tanks. In air-handling or exhaust applications, baffleplaters can dampen noise by breaking up direct sound transmission and mitigating flow-induced vibrations. They can also help prevent sediment buildup by distributing velocity more evenly.

Applications span chemical processing, oil and gas, water and wastewater treatment, HVAC and air handling, and power generation equipment. Design considerations include flow rate, viscosity, temperature, chemical compatibility, pressure drop, ease of maintenance, and accessibility for cleaning. While offering benefits in efficiency and control, baffleplaters can add pressure drop and require periodic inspection to prevent fouling or corrosion.
