Backside illumination (BSI) is an advanced imaging technology used primarily in digital cameras and smartphone sensors to improve image quality and low-light performance. Unlike traditional front-illuminated sensors, where light passes through wiring and other components before reaching the photodiodes, BSI sensors position the photodiodes on the side of the silicon wafer away from the lens. The BSI process involves thinning the sensor and reversing the orientation of the photodiodes so that they face the incoming light.
