Bètaprogrammas are pre-release software versions distributed to a subset of users outside the core development team to discover bugs, assess usability, and gather feedback before a general release. They sit between internal testing (alpha) and the final product, with the aim of improving quality and user experience while revealing issues that are not evident in isolated testing environments.

Beta programs can be closed or open. In closed betas, participants are invited and may sign non-disclosure agreements or agree to privacy terms; open betas allow anyone to join. Participants install the beta build, use it under real-world conditions, and report problems through designated channels such as issue trackers, forums, or feedback forms. Developers typically provide a defined feedback guide and timelines.

Typical goals include identifying software defects, evaluating performance and compatibility across devices, and validating new features under real workloads. Data collection is common, but testers should be aware of privacy and consent; telemetry may be anonymized and users can opt out in some cases. Feedback is triaged by engineers to determine severity and priority.

Risks include instability, data loss, and compatibility issues with existing setups. Beta participants are generally advised not to rely on beta builds for critical tasks and to back up data. Participation helps vendors release a more stable product and informs decisions about feature removal or modification.
