Bärarefrekvensen

Bärarefrekvensen, often translated as carrier frequency or bearer frequency, refers to the frequency of the electromagnetic wave that is used to transmit information. In radio communication and other wireless technologies, a carrier wave is generated at a specific frequency. This carrier wave is then modulated, meaning its properties like amplitude, frequency, or phase are altered to encode the data that needs to be sent. The modulated signal, which still oscillates at the carrier frequency, is then broadcast.

The choice of carrier frequency is crucial and depends on various factors, including the desired transmission range, the amount of data to be transmitted, and regulatory limitations. Lower frequencies can travel longer distances and penetrate obstacles more effectively, but they have a limited bandwidth, meaning they can carry less information. Higher frequencies offer greater bandwidth and can support higher data rates but have a shorter range and are more susceptible to atmospheric conditions and physical obstructions.

Examples of carrier frequencies are found in everyday technologies. AM and FM radio broadcasts use carrier frequencies in the medium and very high frequency (VHF) bands, respectively. Wi-Fi operates on carrier frequencies in the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, while mobile phone communication utilizes a range of frequencies, including those in the gigahertz spectrum. The ability to select and utilize different carrier frequencies allows for the multiplexing of various signals, enabling many different wireless services to operate simultaneously without interfering with each other.
