Aühikmaatriksit are a specific type of mathematical object used in abstract algebra and linear algebra. The term, derived from Finnish, translates roughly to "identity matrix." In essence, an aühikmaatriks is a square matrix, meaning it has the same number of rows and columns. Its defining characteristic is that all the elements on its main diagonal, from the top left to the bottom right, are equal to one, and all other elements are zero.

Aühikmaatriksit are fundamental because they act as the multiplicative identity for matrix multiplication. This means that when an aühikmaatriks is multiplied by any compatible matrix, the result is that same matrix.
