Azrou

Azrou is a town located in the Middle Atlas mountain range in Morocco. Situated at an elevation of approximately 1,200 meters (3,900 feet) above sea level, it is known for its cool climate and surrounding cedar forests. The town's name, "Azrou," is derived from the Berber word for "rock," a reference to a large, distinctive rock formation in its center.

Historically, Azrou has been an important center for Berber tribes in the region. Its strategic location made it a trading post and a site for regional gatherings. Today, it is a popular destination for both Moroccan and international tourists, attracted by its natural beauty, outdoor activities, and cultural heritage. The town is a gateway to the Ifrane National Park, home to a significant population of Barbary macaques.

The economy of Azrou relies partly on tourism, but also on traditional crafts such as carpet weaving and woodworking. The local souk (market) offers a variety of handmade goods. The town's population is predominantly Berber, and the local dialect reflects this heritage. Azrou's distinctive red-tiled roofs are a characteristic feature of its architecture. The municipality serves as an administrative and economic hub for the surrounding rural areas.
