Avatumate

Avatumate is a term used in speculative science and science fiction to denote a hypothetical nanomaterial with programmable physical properties. It is described as a reversible, field-responsive substance capable of changing its density, optical index, and mechanical stiffness in response to external stimuli such as electric, magnetic, or optical fields. In real-world science there is no experimental evidence that avatuma te exists; the concept functions as a thought experiment to explore what programmable matter might achieve.

In imagined implementations, avatumate consists of nanoscale building blocks linked into a responsive lattice. Theoretical models posit that applying a stimulus can rearrange its microstructure, altering macroscopic properties without chemical degradation.
