Außenmessschieber

Außenmessschieber, also known as outside calipers, are measuring instruments used to determine or transfer external dimensions. They are typically made of two adjustable arms, each with a leg that extends outwards. The distance between the tips of these legs can be adjusted to match the external diameter or width of an object. Once the caliper is set to the desired dimension, it can be used to transfer this measurement to a ruler or another measuring device for a precise reading. This makes them particularly useful for measuring curved surfaces or objects where direct measurement with a ruler is difficult.

There are several types of Außenmessschieber, including firm-joint and spring-joint calipers. Firm-joint calipers have a pivot that is fixed, offering greater rigidity and precision for repeated measurements. Spring-joint calipers use a spring mechanism at the pivot, allowing for easier adjustment and a wider range of motion, often preferred for quick estimations. The tips of the legs can be pointed for precise contact or rounded for measuring internal diameters of holes or pipes (though these are typically called Innenmessschieber or inside calipers).

Außenmessschieber are commonly found in workshops, garages, and by craftspeople for tasks such as measuring the diameter of shafts, the thickness of materials, or the external dimensions of components. They are a fundamental tool in mechanical engineering, woodworking, and metalworking, where accurate external measurements are crucial for fitting parts and ensuring proper assembly. While not as precise as digital calipers or micrometers, their simplicity and versatility make them an indispensable part of many toolkits.
