Autóctona

Autóctona is a Spanish adjective and noun used to describe something that originates in or is native to a particular place. It can refer to people, flora, fauna, cultures or languages whose origins are in the local territory rather than being introduced from elsewhere. The feminine form is autóctona, the masculine autóctono, and the plural forms autóctonas and autóctonos.

Etymology traces autóctona to the Greek autochthon, from auto- “self” and khthon “earth,” meaning “the one sprung from the earth itself.” The term entered Spanish via Latin and early modern usage to denote origin from a local soil.
