Automaatlüliteid, commonly known as automatic switches or circuit breakers, are crucial safety devices in electrical systems. Their primary function is to protect electrical circuits from damage caused by overcurrents or short circuits. These overcurrents can arise from various sources, including equipment malfunctions, insulation failures, or overloading. When an excessive current flows, the automaatlüliti detects it and rapidly interrupts the flow of electricity, thereby preventing overheating, fire hazards, and damage to connected appliances.

The operation of an automaatlüliti typically involves a mechanism that trips when a certain current threshold is exceeded. This tripping mechanism can be either thermal, magnetic, or a combination of both. A thermal mechanism uses a bimetallic strip that bends when heated by excessive current, triggering the switch. A magnetic mechanism uses an electromagnet that activates when the current creates a strong enough magnetic field. Once tripped, the automaatlüliti remains in an "off" position and must be manually reset to restore power. This manual reset ensures that the fault condition is investigated before the circuit is re-energized.
