Automaatlüliti, often translated as automatic switch or circuit breaker, is a safety device designed to protect electrical circuits from damage caused by overcurrent. This overcurrent can result from an overload or a short circuit. An overload occurs when a circuit is drawing more current than it is designed to handle, while a short circuit is a direct, low-resistance connection between two points in a circuit that should not be connected.

When an automaatlüliti detects an excessive current, it automatically interrupts the flow of electricity. This is typically achieved through a thermal or magnetic mechanism. In a thermal mechanism, a bimetallic strip heats up and bends when current exceeds a certain limit, tripping a latch and opening the circuit. Magnetic mechanisms use an electromagnet that is activated by a sudden surge in current, also triggering the switch to open.

The primary function of an automaatlüliti is to prevent damage to electrical appliances, wiring, and to reduce the risk of fires. Once the fault condition has been rectified, the automaatlüliti can be manually reset, restoring power to the circuit. This reusability is a key advantage over older fuse technology, which required replacement after each activation. Automaatlülitid are ubiquitous in modern electrical installations, found in homes, businesses, and industrial settings.
