Automaatkäigukast, often referred to as an automatic transmission, is a type of gearbox for motor vehicles that automatically changes gear ratios as the vehicle moves, freeing the driver from needing to shift gears manually. This contrasts with a manual transmission, where the driver must engage and disengage the clutch and shift gears using a gear lever.

The primary function of an automatic transmission is to select the most appropriate gear for the current driving conditions, such as vehicle speed, engine load, and throttle position. This is typically achieved through a complex system of hydraulic pressure, planetary gear sets, and a torque converter or, in some modern designs, a dual-clutch system. The torque converter, a fluid coupling, allows the engine to remain engaged while the vehicle is stationary without stalling, and it also multiplies torque at low speeds.

The development of the automatic transmission began in the early 20th century, with significant advancements made throughout the decades. Early automatics were often less fuel-efficient than their manual counterparts, but modern automatic transmissions, particularly those with more gears or advanced designs like continuously variable transmissions (CVTs) and dual-clutch transmissions (DCTs), have significantly improved in efficiency and performance, often rivaling or even surpassing manual transmissions in fuel economy and acceleration.

Automatic transmissions offer several advantages, including increased driving comfort, especially in stop-and-go traffic, and ease of operation, making vehicles more accessible to a wider range of drivers. The technology continues to evolve, with manufacturers constantly seeking ways to enhance efficiency, responsiveness, and overall driving experience.
