Autodromo

Autodromo is a term used for a motor racing circuit, a purpose-built facility designed for automobile and motorcycle racing. Derived from Italian auto- (car) and dromos (course), the word is widely used in Italian and, with variations such as autódromo in Spanish and Portuguese, in many Latin-language contexts. In English, autodrome or racing circuit is common.

Tracks labeled as autodromos vary in layout and configuration. They may be road courses with mixed corners and elevations or oval tracks designed for high-speed competition. Typical facilities include a pit lane and paddock, grandstands, control towers, and safety features such as barriers and run-off areas. Races held at autodromos range from Formula racing and MotoGP to touring cars and endurance events, and many venues also host track days and testing.

History and usage: The concept arose in the early 20th century as nations sought safer, purpose-built venues beyond street circuits. The Autodromo Nazionale Monza in Italy, opened in 1922, is among the oldest active purpose-built circuits. Other notable autodromos include Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari in Imola (Italy), Autódromo José Carlos Pace in São Paulo (Interlagos, Brazil), Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico City, and Autódromo Internacional do Algarve in Portimão, Portugal.
