AutoTracking

Autotracking refers to systems that automatically maintain alignment with a moving target or object without continuous human control. It relies on sensors, cameras, or measurement data and a feedback loop to adjust orientation or other parameters to keep the object in view.

In astronomy, autotracking describes telescope mounts that compensate for Earth's rotation. Equatorial or other motorized mounts apply precise corrections so a celestial object remains centered in the eyepiece or imaging sensor over long exposures. Autoguiding and computerized control can improve accuracy and allow extended observing sessions without manual adjustment.

In photography, videography, and security, autotracking commonly refers to cameras or gimbals that automatically follow a subject. Vision systems detect a person or object and drive pan, tilt, and sometimes zoom to keep it centered. This technology is used in live broadcast environments, conference setups, sports production, and surveillance, with the option for manual override or preset tracking modes.

In robotics and autonomous systems, autotracking enables a platform to pursue or maintain focus on a designated target. Using sensors such as cameras, lidar, or radar, along with control algorithms and sometimes path planning, the system can keep a target in view, maintain a formation, or execute guided maneuvers. Safety constraints and occlusions pose common challenges.

Limitations of autotracking include dependence on sensor quality, lighting or environmental conditions, occasional misidentification of targets, and potential privacy or security concerns. Proper configuration, calibration, and fail-safes are important for reliable operation across domains.
