Auro3D

Auro-3D is a immersive, three-dimensional sound technology developed by Auro Technologies. It aims to create a more realistic and engaging audio experience by adding a vertical dimension to sound, going beyond traditional surround sound systems. Unlike other immersive audio formats, Auro-3D does not rely on object-based mixing but rather a "channel-based" approach.

The core concept of Auro-3D involves dedicated height channels placed above the listener. These height channels, along with standard surround channels, are encoded into a single audio stream. When a movie or audio content mixed in Auro-3D is played back, an Auro-3D decoder processes the information and directs the sound to the appropriate speakers, including those overhead. This creates a sound field that envelops the listener from all directions, including from above.

Auro-3D playback requires specific speaker configurations. A basic Auro-3D setup includes a traditional 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound system with the addition of one or more height speakers. These height speakers can be mounted on the ceiling or placed on top of existing front and rear speakers, creating what Auro Technologies calls "Voice of God" channels. Higher-end configurations can include more immersive speaker arrangements.

The technology can be implemented in various playback environments, from home theaters to professional cinemas and even portable devices. Content creators can mix their audio in Auro-3D using specialized tools and software. The format aims to provide a seamless upgrade path for existing surround sound setups, often requiring only the addition of height speakers and an Auro-3D compatible receiver or processor. Auro-3D is also designed to be backward compatible, meaning standard surround sound mixes can still be enjoyed on an Auro-3D system.
