Auringonvaraisia is a Finnish term that translates to "sun-kissed" or "sunburnt" and refers to the effect of sun exposure on the skin. It describes the redness and potential discomfort experienced after spending too much time in direct sunlight without adequate protection. This condition is a common form of skin damage caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun.

The severity of auringonvaraisia can range from mild redness and warmth to more intense pain, blistering, and peeling. Prolonged or repeated exposure to the sun leading to auringonvaraisia increases the risk of premature skin aging, such as wrinkles and sunspots, and significantly raises the likelihood of developing skin cancer later in life.

Prevention is key to avoiding auringonvaraisia. This involves limiting direct sun exposure, especially during peak hours when UV radiation is strongest, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Wearing protective clothing, such as hats and long sleeves, and seeking shade are effective measures. The most crucial preventative step is the consistent application of broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF (sun protection factor) to all exposed skin. Reapplication of sunscreen is recommended, particularly after swimming or sweating. In cases of severe auringonvaraisia, cool compresses and moisturizing lotions can help soothe the skin, but medical attention may be necessary if blistering is extensive or accompanied by fever or chills.
