Applications span education and training, entertainment, corporate communications, live events, and broadcasting. Audiovisuals are used to inform, persuade, or entertain, often combining visuals with sound design, narration, and captions.

Industry structure includes AV integration and installation, equipment rental and staging, postproduction and content distribution, and broadcasting. Common formats and standards support interoperability, such as HDMI and SDI for video, USB for data, and widely used audio and video codecs.

Current trends include digital and cloud-based workflows, immersive technologies such as virtual and augmented reality, higher resolution formats (4K/8K) and high dynamic range, streaming delivery, and accessibility features.
