In licensing, especially with Creative Commons and other open licenses, attribution is a legal requirement. The attributionTo field can help ensure proper credit is displayed and machine-readable, supporting automatic generation of credits in repositories and user interfaces. It may also be used to convey the preferred form of the creator’s name, affiliation, or contact information.

In linked data and data provenance, attributionTo often links the work to a resource describing the agent, typically via a URI. Example uses include linking to an author profile, organizational page, or identifier such as an ORCID or ISNI. This helps disambiguate creators and supports accurate credit across platforms.

Challenges include handling multiple contributors, changes in ownership, and the risk of misattribution. Privacy considerations may arise when attribution details reveal sensitive affiliations. Best practices involve using persistent identifiers for agents, providing clear names and roles, and linking to authoritative sources. Regular updates to attribution data help maintain accuracy, especially as licenses and rights holders evolve.
