Attenuatus is a Latin adjective used in scientific naming to denote a slender, narrowed, or attenuated form. In biological nomenclature, it appears as a specific epithet (and occasionally in subspecific epithets) across diverse groups, signaling a characteristic morphology rather than indicating a taxonomic rank by itself.

Etymology and form: Attenuatus derives from Latin attenuatus, the past participle of attenuere “to thin out,” from ad- “toward” + tenuis “thin.” The epithet is masculine; attenuata and attenuatum are the feminine and neuter forms, respectively, and all agree with the gender of the genus they modify.

Taxonomic usage: The epithet attenuatus is descriptive and non-unique, used in the names of many species across plants, animals, and fungi to indicate slender, threadlike, or reduced features relative to related taxa.
