Attentionwhores, also known as attention seekers, are individuals who consistently crave and seek to attract attention from others, often at the expense of their own dignity or at the expense of those around them. This behavior can manifest in various ways, such as through provocative or dramatic actions, lavish displays of wealth or material possessions, or through self-aggrandizing behavior online or in public.

Research suggests that attentionwhores often exhibit traits of narcissism, attachment disorder, or other personality disorders. In some cases, their behavior may be a coping mechanism for underlying emotional issues or a way to compensate for feelings of inadequacy. Online communities and social media platforms have particular density of attentionwhores due to their ease of self-promotion and unwarranted attention.

Often, attentionwhores elicit feelings of frustration, exasperation, or anger from those they target. Others may engage with their behavior out of morbid curiosity or schadenfreude. Critics argue that attentionwhores destabilize social norms and undermine constructive communication by deflecting from genuine conversation or penury.

Personality psychologists have described the National Attention Rating Scale (NARS) to measure the propensity to become an attentionwhore. Interests and experiences such as exploring scenic areas and pursuing personal interests might account for variance in study.
