AtsimoAndrefana

Atsimo-Andrefana is one of the 22 regions of Madagascar. It is located in the southwestern part of the island, bordering the Mozambique Channel to the west. The region's capital is Toliara. Atsimo-Andrefana covers an area of approximately 66,236 square kilometers and has a population of around 1,187,276 people as of the 2013 census.

The region's geography is characterized by a dry, semi-arid climate, particularly in the western parts. It features a diverse landscape, including coastal plains, savannas, and some mountainous areas in the east. The Onilahy River is a significant waterway in Atsimo-Andrefana. The economy of the region is largely based on agriculture, with staple crops including rice, maize, and cassava. Cattle herding is also a common practice, and fishing is important in the coastal areas. Tourism is a developing sector, attracted by the region's unique landscapes and wildlife, including the spiny forests and the Avenue of the Baobabs.

Atsimo-Andrefana is home to several ethnic groups, with the Bara people being prominent. The region faces challenges related to poverty, infrastructure development, and environmental conservation, particularly concerning deforestation and desertification. Efforts are underway to promote sustainable development and improve the livelihoods of its inhabitants. The region's natural resources are significant, including mineral deposits, although their exploitation is often limited by logistical and economic factors.
