Atomfluorescensspektrometri, also known as Atomic Fluorescence Spectrometry (AFS), is an analytical technique used to determine the concentration of specific elements in a sample. It is based on the principle of atomic fluorescence, where atoms of an element absorb light energy and then re-emit light at a specific wavelength.

The process begins with the atomization of the sample, typically using a flame or a graphite furnace, to create free atoms. These atoms are then irradiated with light from a source that emits at the specific wavelength corresponding to the element of interest. The atoms absorb this light energy and are excited to a higher energy state. As they return to their ground state, they emit light at a characteristic wavelength, which is then measured by a detector.

AFS is particularly useful for the detection of elements that are difficult to analyze using other spectroscopic methods, such as mercury, arsenic, and selenium. It offers high sensitivity and selectivity, making it a valuable tool in various fields, including environmental monitoring, food safety, and clinical analysis. However, it requires careful calibration and optimization to ensure accurate results. Despite its advantages, AFS is less commonly used than other atomic spectroscopy techniques like Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS) and Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS), due to its complexity and the need for specialized equipment.
