Aterosklerootiset

Aterosklerootiset refers to conditions or processes related to atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is a common medical condition characterized by the hardening and narrowing of the arteries. This happens when plaque, a deposit of cholesterol, fat, calcium, and other substances, builds up on the inner walls of the arteries. Over time, this plaque can harden and narrow the arteries, restricting blood flow.

The term "aterosklerootiset" essentially describes anything that is a consequence or manifestation of atherosclerosis. For example, aterosklerootiset plakki (atherosclerotic plaque) is the buildup within the artery walls. Aterosklerootiset muutokset (atherosclerotic changes) refer to the progressive changes in the arteries due to this disease.

Atherosclerosis is a major risk factor for serious cardiovascular diseases, including heart attack, stroke, and peripheral artery disease. Risk factors for developing atherosclerosis include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, diabetes, obesity, and a sedentary lifestyle.

The progression of atherosclerosis is often silent and can go undetected for many years. Symptoms typically appear when the narrowed arteries significantly reduce blood flow to vital organs. Treatment focuses on managing risk factors, lifestyle changes, and in some cases, medications or procedures to open up narrowed arteries.
