Atemdruckwerte, often translated as breathing pressure values, refer to the measurements of pressure exerted during the respiratory cycle. These values are crucial in understanding and managing respiratory function, particularly in clinical settings. They are typically measured in centimeters of water (cmH2O) or hectopascals (hPa).

Several key pressure values are monitored. Inspiratory positive airway pressure (IPAP) is the higher pressure delivered during inhalation, designed to help open the airways and facilitate air intake. Expiratory positive airway pressure (EPAP) is the lower pressure maintained during exhalation, preventing airway collapse and supporting gas exchange. The difference between IPAP and EPAP is known as the pressure support or pressure support ventilation (PSV), which provides assistance during inspiration.

Another important measurement is the plateau pressure, which represents the pressure in the alveoli at the end of inspiration when airflow has stopped. This value is a good indicator of lung compliance and is used to prevent lung overdistension, a potential complication of mechanical ventilation. Peak inspiratory pressure (PIP) is the highest pressure recorded during the inspiratory phase, reflecting the resistance within the airways and the lungs.

Abnormal Atemdruckwerte can indicate various respiratory issues, such as airway obstruction, reduced lung compliance (stiffness), or leaks in the ventilation system. Monitoring these values allows healthcare professionals to adjust ventilator settings, optimize patient comfort, and ensure effective oxygenation and ventilation. They are fundamental parameters in the management of conditions like acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and during surgical procedures requiring mechanical ventilation.
