Ateísta

Ateísta is a term used to describe a person who does not believe in the existence of deities or who identifies as atheist. In Portuguese, it can function as both adjective and noun and is closely related to the concept of atheism, which rejects belief in gods and other theological claims.

The word derives from the Greek atheos (literally “without gods”), formed with the privative prefix a- and theos (god), and it reached Portuguese through Latin and other European languages. The modern usage of ateísta and ateísmo was consolidated in the 19th and 20th centuries, alongside broader discussions about religion, science, and secularism.

In everyday usage, ateísta is often treated as a synonym of ateu, though some sources distinguish the adjective as indicating a more explicit stance against belief in deities. In formal writing, alternatives such as descrente or sem crença religiosa may be used, depending on context. Among Portuguese-speaking communities, the term can carry neutral, descriptive nuance or, in some conversations, a pejorative undertone depending on tone and audience.

Social and legal contexts vary widely. In many modern societies, freedom of belief protects the right to atheism, and public discourse includes open discussions about secularism and religion. Nevertheless, acceptance of non-religious identities differs by region, culture, and social group, and atheists may face stigma or discrimination in certain settings.
