Ataânduse is a traditional communal weaving ceremony practiced by the fictional highland communities of Valara. It combines hand weaving on vertical looms with song, call-and-response chanting, and narrative storytelling, producing a single cloth that is later used in rites and social exchanges. The practice is typically performed during the autumn harvest and at life-cycle ceremonies, and it serves as a focal point for community cohesion.

Etymology and origins: The name is generally analyzed as a compound from the Andali language, with ata- meaning “together” and nduse or vànduse meaning “to weave.” Scholars emphasize the collaborative nature of the work, in which weaving, singing, and movement are interdependent. The exact historical origins are uncertain, but most accounts place the practice in a long-standing tradition of communal craft and oral storytelling.

Practice and techniques: Participants form circles around a set of looms or a chain of nearby looms. Fibers—natural dyed threads and locally sourced yarns—are fed into the weave as a chorus leads verses that recount kinship lines, seasonal knowledge, and village myths. The cloth’s patterns use motifs that symbolize harvest abundance, water flow, and social ties; color choices convey status, lineage, and regional affiliation. Apprentices learn by watching masters and gradually assuming more complex weaving and singing duties.
